It gives me a great pleasure to present you the Momentum for Change: Community Radio in Bangladesh – Voice of Rural People.

Bangladesh NGOs Network for Radio and Communication (BNNRC) has been struggling for the last 14 years to open up the community broadcasting including Community Radio, Community Television and giving emphasis on its vital role as voices of the voiceless people. BNNRC has been addressing the community radio, community TV and community film access issue. For helping to bridge the information gap of rural Bangladesh.

Now 14 Community Radio Stations are on-air in the country, aiming to ensure empowerment and right to information for the rural community. They are broadcasting altogether 120 hours program per day on information, education, local entertainment and development motivation activities. Around 536 youth & youth-women are now working with those stations throughout the country as rural broadcasters.
The reality of today is that the bondage between the community people and local-level community radio stations are getting strengthened day-by-day. Community Radio has now become their part of life. Community Radio becomes the improving for the life & livelihood of the rural people.
Besides BNNRC has been awarded affiliate membership with Asia-Pacific Institute for Broadcasting Development (AIBD) & Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union(ABU) for knowledge exchange and resource sharing in regional and global level.
BNNRC has initiated a process to explore the future of development cooperation and the role of community broadcasting over the next 15 years, and we already have a new challenge! While we are in the process to set up Community Media News Agency (CMNA), Community Media Academy (CMA) & online web portal for community radio at national level.

In this opportunity, we would like to express our sincere gratitude to our Government, Development Partners, Academia, Researchers, Media, CSOs and Initiators taking interest on issue of community broadcasting for development in Bangladesh.

We invite you to join in our STRUGGLE! We hope you are – or will become one of our future partners for promoting community broadcasting in Bangladesh.

Let’s all do our part to build Momentum for Change in Bangladesh through Community Broadcasting.

Tudno FM granted 5 year licence extension

Tudno FM is proud to announce that our five year license has been extended until 2018 by regulators OFCOM.

This momentous decision means that the station can continue to grow and promote other charitable organisations.

We would like to thank all the volunteers, funders and importantly, the listeners that have made the station what it is today, without you all, we would not have been awarded the 5 year extension on the licence!

By granting us this extension, OFCOM have shown that they have faith in us to continue to grow and prosper!

Community Radio in Bangladesh: Achievement and Challenge- Recent Experience

Community Radio in Bangladesh:
Achievement and Challenge- Recent Experience

It is really amazing that toady 14 community radios are broadcasting 100 hours program in a day! I am proud to feel that community radio is taking place as an essential mass media within the lives of the rural people. We gave thanks to Ministry of Information of Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh that they have approved community radio activities with the objectives to achieve empowerment and to ensure right to information of the rural people. What was our dream now becomes a reality in 2012!

We could rightly identify that due to globalization, in receiving information and knowledge, the difference between urban and rural societies widened. As a result, people are losing access to the basic ingredients of life. As days go on they are becoming asset-less. On this context, we have started policy advocacy with government for community radio installation to exchange and disseminate information and knowledge effectively within the rural society. We also believe that any good work needs devotion and dedication. We have now achieved community radio after 14 years of dedication.

However we did not fail! While we see 536 young boy and girls are now working as rural broadcasters in community radio stations. A total of 125 (98 male and 27 female) are now involved in community radio station management committees from the rural community and trying to achieve the ownership at the local level. The government officials and civil society at upazila/district level have joined in CR station Advisory Committee and started motivating the mass people to take part in local development and entertainment by using community radio as a platform for mutual learning. In this way, these officials are taking a great role to build a knowledge-based society at rural level. Therefore our effort for 14 years was not mere wastage!

The reality of today is that the bondage between the community radio and local-level radio stations are getting strengthened day-by-day. Community Radio has now become their part of life. Community Radio becomes the instrument for the livelihood battle of the rural people. We have now started advocacy with the government of Bangladesh on community television. We hope that community television will come into being within a short time.

Community Radio Stations in Bangladesh will be a wonderful platform for dialogue of the rural people. This dialogue will help the community to discover their own voice. For them, this will ensure helpful social, economic and cultural conditions and the freedom of opinion in the realm of politics.

We hope this book will be useful for the community media activist, policy makers, academia and development partners working to achieve a free, independent and pluralistic community media sector of voices for the voiceless in rural Bangladesh

With best wishes,

Bazlu

Catholic Internet Radio needs VOLUNTEERS

Volunteer sound/broadcast engineers, programme editors, programme makers, interviewers and presenters, wanted for new Catholic Internet Radio

If you’ve a bit of time and would like to contribute to something worthwhile in the community, we’d be delighted to hear from you – we’re a lively bunch and want people to enjoy their time helping us produce an interesting mix of programmes to broadcast to our Catholic audience.

We go live on 16th September and still have opportunities to contribute to new projects. See our attached schedule and visit hguh.co.uk to learn more about us. Our studio is at Wonersh, near Guildford, and much of our material will be pre-recorded. Many of our projects such as programme making, audio file editing or admin can be done via the internet, but to broadcast you would need to be able to get to Wonersh.

We are particularly interested in sound/editing and broadcasting engineers. We’d also love to hear from you if you are:

* An experienced or keen in-experienced presenter
* Don’t want to present but want to do something else
* Want to do something for the Catholic community but not sure what

You don’t have to be Catholic to join the team, but you should have sympathy with Christianity. More details here – http://www.hguh.co.uk/volunteers.htm or get in touch with us at hguh.info@hguh.co.uk .

Looking Forward to hearing from you!
