A selection of community radio on the social networking sites

Here’s some MySpace sites run by community radio stations

Facebook can be used as a promotional tool by the station.

Station Websites

Here’s a little selection of some quite different community radio station websites, all of which we think have some great features worth looking at:

A really useful discussion

This information was provided by Bill Best at the Community Media Association in response to a discussion forum query. Additional information advice was also given by Tony Wilding, below. Got something to add? Comment below.

“Internet radio stations are so varied that it can be difficult to come up
with a “one-size fits all” solution for radio station websites.”

However a simple website template could easily be adapted for your needs and there are literally thousands to choose from a site like this:
http://www.oswd.org/

But searching for ‘radio station template’ finds this:
http://www.freewebsitetemplates.com/forum/showthread.php?t=643

The above template has a number of elements that might be useful such as: featured bands, playlist, partners, and breaking news.

A little bit more complex but ultimately potentially more usable is a content-management system based website. A content management system (CMS), once installed, will allow you to update your website without needing to know HTML code.

A popular CMS is CMSMadeSimple (http://www.cmsmadesimple.org/) which has a dedicated radio module created for radio stations – this can be found here: http://dev.cmsmadesimple.org/projects/radioroster/

Another excellent CMS is Drupal (http://drupal.org/) and there is a dedicated
group of modules to run a radio station’s website called Station:
http://drupal.org/project/station.

Another popular template cms (Content Management System) is Joomla.http://www.joomla.org/

Many different theme (design) sets are available and a range of modules serving various functions (news for instance).Take a look at Castledown radio who use Joomla for the news function: http://www.castledownradio.info
Tony Wilding, Rugby Hospital Radio

And we heard again from Bill: Indeed Joomla! is another fine CMS and there appears to be a radio station template for it here:

http://www.joomlahacks.com/component/option,com_remository/Itemid,41/func,fileinfo/id,362/

A good way to evaluate different CMS’s is to have a look at this site where they have set-up scores of demonstration sites:
