2012 Sony Radio Academy Awards


The Radio Academy has today marked the launch of the 2012 Sony Radio Academy Awards with a new website – www.radioacademyawards.org – giving full details of the Award Categories and the terms and conditions of entry.

2012 marks the 30th anniversary of the Sony Radio Academy Awards – the most prestigious awards in the radio industry’s calendar and the only event that brings the entire sector together to celebrate outstanding content and creativity – nationally, regionally and locally.

This year, there are 34 Award Categories, each identifying a specific aspect of radio production and presentation and providing an opportunity for programmes, production teams, individuals and stations to be recognised.

John Myers, CEO of the The Radio Academy and Chairman of the Sony Radio Academy Awards Committee said: “I am delighted to launch the 2012 Awards and look forward to seeing who will walk away with the most prestigious awards in the industry. Everyone wants to win a Sony.”

The deadline for entries is Wednesday 8th February 2012 and the Nominations will be announced early in April.
The Awards Ceremony will take place on Monday 14th May at the Grosvenor House Hotel, London where the Gold, Silver and Bronze winners will be revealed.

Note to entrants: Submissions into either of the Breakfast Show of the Year categories and all of the Station of the Year categories will be required to submit output from either Thursday 24th November, Friday 25th November OR Monday 28th November 2011.



Celtic Music Radio nominated for award

Congratulatons to Celtic Music Radio who have been nominated for a Trad Music in the Media Award in the MG Alba Scots Trad Music Awards 2010. The staff work tirelessly and with great enthusiasm to nurture and promote local musicians and events.

The 8th MG ALBA Scots Trad Music Awards and Gala Concert is on 4th December 2010, Perth Concert Hall. The aim of these Awards is to highlight Scotland’s wonderful traditional music in all its forms and to create a high profile opportunity which will bring the music and music industry into the spotlight of media & public attention.

Melton’s radio station celebrates award

Community radio station 103 The Eye has won another regional award for its work.

The station, which covers Melton and the Vale of Belvoir, was judged winner of the ‘contribution to the community’ category in the Federation of Small Businesses Awards 2010 for Leicestershire, Northamptonshire and Rutland.

Awards were presented at the federation’s recently held first business awards gala dinner.

The Third Sector Excellence Awards have rapidly gained pre-eminence as “the Awards to win” in this dynamic, challenging, yet hugely rewarding sector for registered charities, not-for-profits, social enterprises and campaigning groups.



The CRT Web Award for Community Radio Stations 2007


The Community Radio Toolkit is delighted to announce the winners of the Web Award for Community Radio Stations. The winners’ websites were selected on the basis of ease of use, welcoming messages, key features for radio station websites, clear invitations to get involved as well as their look and design.

The joint winners are Weave FM and Harborough FM.

This new web award was launched this year to showcase community radio station websites, highlighting good practice and engaging features.

The Community Radio Toolkit – a joint enterprise of the Community Media Association and Radio Regen –supports community radio practitioners with web-based resources, emphasising mutual support and sharing of expertise. This web award aimsto inspire and inform practitioners by showing the sector’s diverse and varied approaches to website design and content.

Weave FM impressed the panel with its accessible, attractive and welcoming website. “This is an excellent site and very user friendly. The colour schemes and visuals are very warm andfriendly and navigating through the site is very straightforward”, said panel member Tom Buckham. We found Weave FM’s website particularly inviting and informative about getting involved as a volunteer or a board member. Visit them at www.weavefm.com

The panel found Harborough FM’s website offered a good representation of the local community with a dynamic feel and aclean look. Panel members Michelle Doust and Bill Best of the Community Media Association considered it “most inviting to potential volunteers. A very welcoming website that is easy to navigate”.Check them out at www.harboroughfm.co.uk

Special commendations go to Feile FM at www.feilefm.com for an attractive, warm and friendly site and US-based Wyce at www.wyce.org for its professional look and variety of music-oriented features. Radio Active at www.radioactivelive.com were commended for their striking design, fulsome content and good use of technology.

The panel was made of Bill Best, Technical Managerand Miche lle Doust, Multimedia & Information Officer of the Community Media Association,Tom Buckham, Station Manager with Future Radio and Danielle Lowy, Online Communities Coordinator with Community Radio Toolkit.

The panel would like to take this opportunity to thank all entrants to the award.

We were impressed by the range of features and functions that the websites offered across the board and particularly enjoyed sites showing the personality of their station and community. On some websites more work could be done on ease of navigation as well as the level of interaction offered to existing and potential volunteers and listeners.

Congratulations again to our winners, Weave FM and Harborough FM who receive a goodie bag with a Community RadioToolkit handbook, FM radio pen, USB drive and mousemat as well as a special Community Media Association mug.
