Winner

The winner of the Marantz PMD620 Professional Handheld Recorder supplied by our friends at Studiocare is Glyn and the team at GlossFM. Glyn (aka radiohead) submitted two pieces of quality audio but the clear winner was one entitled ‘Greek’. Our judge liked the wordplay between the two characters which brought humour to the importance of voting and highlighted the “witty script, good acting and high production values…also doesn’t bash you about the head with ‘the politics’”.

You can listen to and download the ‘Greek’ audio here:

A special mention

We’d also like to highlight the contributions by:

celtic music radioBruce at Celtic Music Radio

Bruce (aka Bruce ;-) submitted an unusual and emotive piece about the right to vote. Our judge said “A thoughtful mini essay on what drives protest music and how ‘the vote’ is part of that call”.

Bruce said: We decided to do a feature on political protest songs – the tag line being that you should use your vote rather than sing about it afterwards. We had lots of great ideas, but most got rejected- tracks like the Internationale, and “Repeal the Poll Tax” wouldn’t make it past the censors. So we decided to do a feature on (mainly international) protest songs. Music beds used:

I wish I knew how it would feel to be free – Nina Simone – Lamb/Taylor
The times they are a changin – Dylan – Dylan
Free Nelson Mandela – The Special A.K.A – Dammer
Revolution – Beatles – Lennon/McCartney

Staffordshire Moorlands RadioSteve at Moorlands Radio

Our judge also liked the entry from Steve at Moorlands Radio who produced a punchy and persuasive piece targeting the apathy felt by the public.  This would especially appeal to harder to reach younger voters through its use of Drum and Bass. Our judge liked the “opening with a blast of cynicism, then mixing a big beat with a big push to register your vote”.

  1. Congratulations to Glyn! That “greek” piece is good – it reminds me a bit of a “Smith and Jones”-style sketch, or maybe even two Ronnies! Clever wordplay.

I must apologise for the poor audio quality on ours; I put it together when working away from home, and couldn’t get access to a proper studio or vocal channel. So it was recorded using a handheld mp3 recorder, (much the same as the competition prize!) and edited down on the laptop when on the train to work!

I like that Nina Simone track… everyone knows it as the “Film” theme, with Barry Norman or Jonathan Ross, depending on your age, but few people know the words these days.

  2. WOW – thanks a lot!
I’d love to grab all the glory, but really I only played a small part in these adverts. The roll of honour goes to:

Scripts: Ian Searle wrote the scripts

Legal/Election advice: Stuart Hook (South Glos Returning Officer)

Acting – Ross Harvey and Dave Masters (two GLOSS FM presenters who present on Saturday at 11am)

Myself Glyn Roylance for post-production, sound effects etc.
