Ultra Radio announce their punk DJ

From press releases to pogo dances and spin to safety pins, it’s all change for public relations consultant Keith Newman as he takes up the role of new wave and punk DJ for Northumberland’s newest community radio station.

Keith, who runs Morpeth based Highlights PR has joined Ultra Radio and will present a weekly show playing the best of new wave bands such as The Stranglers, The Clash and The Damned. Already, Keith has met and recorded interviews with Stiff Little Fingers front man, Jake Burns and one of his all time heroes, drummer Marky Ramone from The Ramones.

“I’ve been a Ramones fan since the late 1970’s and to actually get to meet Marky was a fantastic privilege,” said Keith. “He was very professional and gave me advice on how to manage my radio show as well as an insight into life as a Ramone.”

Keith met Marky when he visited Newcastle recently on one of only two UK appearances to present a DJ set. His next UK appearance is with his band Blitzkrieg at the 02 Academy in Islington London on 26th June.

Further interviews have been arranged with Jarrow band Crashed Out, ex Penetration vocalist Pauline Murray, Ramones tour manager Monte A Melnick and New York City punk photographer Roberta Bayley.

Keith’s “New Wave with Newman” show will broadcast on Thursday evenings from 8pm to 10pm starting on 9th June while Ultra Radio will launch officially on 87.7FM two days earlier for a four week trial period. It will broadcast to towns in South East Northumberland and will have a reach of more than 150,000 listeners with the FM service broadcasting to Ashington, Bedlington, Newbiggin, Morpeth, Blyth and Cramlington.

Station Director Simon Ferson was delighted to welcome Keith on board and believes that the show will become a firm favourite with the local community and beyond.

“Keith is so enthusiastic about his genre of music and that passion will shine through to our local listeners on FM and worldwide on the internet. He’s already proven his worth by securing an exclusive media interview with Marky Ramone who is undoubtedly one of the major players in the punk world,” he said. “It’s a far cry from his day job and I’m sure many of his clients will be very surprised to learn about his volunteer role with Ultra Radio. I know that they will all tune in to support him though.”
