Community Radio Station given 5k grant by Somerset Community Foundation

It is with great delight I am able to inform you that a local group of Cheddar residents have successfully been awarded a £5000 pound grant from the Somerset Community Foundation towards our forth coming RSL (Restrictive Service Licence), the not-for-profit community station has been on air via the internet since 2008 in its current format, known as Pulse Radio (Previously called Cheddar Radio) www.pulseradio.org.

The station is registered with companies house as a not-for-profit company called Pulse Media Broadcasting Limited and has five local volunteer directors; Mark Carney Chief Executive & Technical Advisor, Jacquie Franks Managing Director, Barry Spencer Operations Director & Station Manager, Mike Ashley Financial Director & Presenter and Alan Cherrington Public Relations Director. In June 2010 Alan Cherrington kindly donated free of charge premises for the station to operate from after the group had spent almost 12 months looking for a suitable location within the area. The new studio(s) will now be based at The Coach House in Cheddar and are currently under construction, once completed local residents and schools will be able to use the facilities which will include in-house training in all aspects of presenting, managing and running a radio station.

The station has recently submitted an expression of interest to Ofcom for a full time community licence in the forthcoming application invites expected towards the end of 2010 or early 2011.

Pulse Radio already has 45 volunteers and growing offering services and support along with local show presentations. Pulse Radio is about to commence production of local interest programming, broadcasting information about the area including community groups, local events and good causes. If you’ve got something to shout about, then Pulse Radio wants to help!

Anyone wishing to join Pulse Radio are encouraged to send an email in the first instance to volunteer@pulseradio.org outlining their interest in the station, one of the members of staff will then contact them by return email. Alternatively there is a public volunteers meeting on Thursday 5th August 2010 starting at 8.00pm within the function room of the White Hart, Cheddar Gorge, Somerset.
